ABSTRACT

The increasing demand for sustainable and automated lawn maintenance solutions has driven advancements in intelligent robotics and renewable energy systems. This paper presents the design and development of a Solar-Powered Lawn Mower Robot, an autonomous and eco-friendly system designed to minimize manual labor, fuel consumption, and environmental impact. The robot operates entirely on solar energy and integrates sensor-based obstacle detection, autonomous navigation algorithms, and mobile application control for improved functionality and user convenience. The system was developed using the Design Thinking framework, emphasizing user-centered innovation through the stages of empathy, definition, ideation, prototyping, and testing. A total of 40 participants, including robotics experts, administrators, faculty members, lawn care workers, and homeowners, contributed to the evaluation process. The robot was assessed in accordance with the ISO 18646-2:2019 standard for service robots, achieving a “Very Great Extent” rating in safety, reliability, and performance. Results demonstrate that the Solar-Powered Lawn Mower Robot meets key criteria for functionality, sustainability, and user satisfaction, representing a significant improvement over traditional lawn maintenance methods. The study highlights the potential of autonomous, solar-powered robotics in advancing efficient and environmentally responsible lawn care solutions.
