ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship between mental health and well-being among female college students from single-parent families to provide insights for enhancing their psychological and emotional health. A total of 110 female college students from single-parent families were randomly selected from a university in Guangdong Province. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, utilizing standardized instruments such as the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) and the General Well-Being Scale to assess mental health status and overall well-being. Findings revealed that most participants demonstrated good mental health and high levels of well-being. A significant positive correlation was observed between mental health and well-being: students with better mental health reported greater well-being, whereas those with poorer mental health experienced lower well-being. Key issues affecting their mental health and well-being included inadequate school-based mental health education and guidance, social difficulties, economic challenges, personal psychological concerns, and family-related problems. Based on these findings, a plan of action was developed to enhance the mental health and well-being of female college students from single-parent families. The proposed strategies focus on improving mental health education, providing counseling services, and strengthening family and community support systems.
